Jonathan Jacob
I’m a doctoral student in Sociology and Social Policy at Brandeis University. I received my MA in Social Sciences from The University of Chicago and my BA in Business from Brandeis University. Born and raised in Indonesia, I spent 10 years of my life in the humid, sprawling capital of Jakarta before moving to Singapore, China, and eventually, the United States. I currently reside in Boston.
My research foci are broadly concerned with issues of labor, social inequality, culture, race, and ethnicity. At the moment, I'm interested in Black-Asian relations in America. Specifically, I want to examine how the Model Minority Myth has been deployed in media and political discourse to juxtapose these two historically marginalized groups, and how Asian-Americans internalize such belief, rationalize inequalities, and view affirmative action programs.
Prior to graduate school, I was a high school educator who worked closely with underrepresented students to achieve their college aspirations. I offer a pay-as-you-wish college advising service.
Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, hiking, jogging, and watching movies. Recently, I've been into anime and deep frying.
